Haven turns 60 years old this month

Haven Humane Society turns 60 this month and the facility’s staff will celebrating that milestone throughout the year, announced Ray John, chief executive officer.

“We want to thank everyone who has supported Haven by helping us care for and control the overpopulation of unwanted pets since 1952,” John said.

Through the years, many positive changes have formed the organization originally founded as the Shasta County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Animals.

As public agencies became better educated, children gained protection under law, John noted.

“Because animals obtained no such protections, the Humane Society stood alone as the only agency to offer assistance for animals. In 1974, the name was officially changed to Haven Humane Society.”

Haven’s shelter moved from Placer Road to the larger Eastside Road facility in 1987.

Today, Haven enjoys a broad volunteer base that offers a variety of youth and educational programs as well as presenting special dog training classes for the public as well as basic socialization and obedience training for dogs housed at the shelter.

“I welcome the public to come celebrate with us throughout the year as we continue to serve the communities of the north state with first-class adoptions and specially funded programs so the animals we receive have a chance for a quality life,” he said.

“We are grateful for the continued donations and support that will help us continue to care for them,” John said.
