Cubs wrestlers compete at Tim Brown Invite

Due to injuries and previous commitments Anderson sent 9 of 14 varsity wrestlers to the Tim Brown Invitational Wrestling Tournament over the weekend in Sacramento, said Coach Don Williams.

A total of 87 teams gathered at Memorial Auditorium for the event.

“Overall, it was a good tournament for the Cub grapplers,” Williams stated in an email. “All nine wrestlers won at least one match, and most won multiple matches.”

According to Williams, five wrestlers made it to the second day of competition — Bud Johns (113), Aaron Evett (120), Alek Miller (126) Spencer Larsen (138) and Chris Webb (152). Williams added that the Tim Browm wrestling tournament is viewed as the second toughest tournament in the state.

Both Johns and Larsen came one match away from placing in the top eight, said Williams.

“After going 3-1 on Friday, Bud Johns won his first two matches Saturday, before losing a close match to eventual seventh placer, Dominic Calabro of Woodland,” Williams said. “Spencer Larsen made it to the quarter finals on Friday with a 4-3 victory over sixth seed Matt Bettencourt of Elk Grove. Saturday morning he lost a close 2-4 decision to the third seeded Mason Koshyama of Folsom. In his final match Larsen lost to Tyler Noon of Oakdale in a close, hard fought battle.”

“I’m very pleased with our progress at this point in the season. We are improving each time we compete.”

Today Anderson will host NAL foe Corning. Junior varsity will start the dual at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Cubs varsity team compete at the Corning Invitational at 9 a.m.
