An Anderson woman and two others were arrested on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, robbery and felony assault in the June 20 attack of a pregnant Redding woman on the Sacramento River Trail near the Sundial Bridge, Redding police announced Friday, July 20.
Erica Swann, 29, was arrested Thursday, July 19, on suspicion of robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime and battery, and booked into Shasta County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Swann told police at the time of last month’s incident that she and Nicole Vultaggio, 18, were walking west of the bridge when they were robbed by two men.
Vultaggio was eight months pregnant at the time of the assault and was taken to Mercy Medical Center where she gave birth to a premature but otherwise healthy baby.
Police said investigators have worked diligently on the case and focused their investigation on Swann, who was not injured during the robbery and did not appear to be a target of the suspects.
Investigators obtained cellular telephone records which revealed that Swann was texting with unknown subjects seconds before the assault. A series of search warrants led Investigators to Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego, where Vultaggio’s former boyfriend, Lance Swann, 20, of Laguna Niguel, resides and serves in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Lance and Erica Swann are cousins, police said.
Investigators also identified Lance Swann’s associate as Jeffrey Thomas Walton, 20, of Ventura, also serving in the Marine Corps. The man told investigators he participated in the assault-robbery along with Lance Swann.
He confirmed that Erica Swann was involved in the plot and had texted Lance Swann to signal when she and Vultaggio arrived at the trail, police said.
Investigators served a search warrant at Erica Swann’s residence in Anderson and recovered property that she had reported taken during the robbery, police said
She was arrested and booked into jail.
Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Lance Swann and Walton, who are both being detained at Camp Pendleton by Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS).
All three will be charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, robbery and felony assault, RPD investigator Greg Wilkes said during a news conference today.
“The idea was to harm her and her baby,” Wilkes said. Lance Swann will also be charged with spousal abuse, police said.
