  • <strong>Lori Heath, West Valley High School</strong> “Lori is such a responsible, conscientious student. We would all be proud if our own children turned out like she has,” said Home Economics Teacher Delaine Smith. This 12th grade student has been a part of Smith’s program for three years and is an “A” student according to Smith. “She works very hard for the school in many important ways, never misses a deadline, and can be depended upon 100 percent,” Smith said. When Heath was a sophomore, she worked every day helping Special Day Class students in the Life Skills class with their daily assignments.This yearbook staff member also catered over 500 deserts last fall for the school’s play.She is considering a career in pharmacy and will attend Shasta College next fall. When not in school she enjoys riding quads or working at her after school job at Baja Burrito.
  • <strong>Jose Luis Melendez, Anderson High School</strong> Jose is bi-lingual and “wants to understand everything,” said Carol Perea who nominated Melendez. “He puts lots of time in on his studies and encourages his friends to do their homework and work hard in their classes,” said Perea. “He is a dedicated and hard working student and is an excellent role model,” she continued. “Jose Luis is a living example of Ben Franklin’s quote ‘Well done is better than well said.’ He demonstrates modesty, yet is proud. He does what he says and is never boastful,” Perea added. This soccer-loving senior would like to go to college and study business while attaining his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
  • <strong>Cody Stevens, Anderson New Technology High School</strong> As a junior at New Technology, Stevens was nominated “for his outstanding positive attitude, work ethic and consideration of others,” said art teacher Michelle Boydstun. “He spends a lot of time working and perfecting his expertise using various digital media programs and then gladly volunteers to help others in the digital media class,” she added. On campus, Stevens participates in the annual blanket drive and, when off campus, he enjoys barbecuing steaks when he is not golfing or drumming. With one more year to go at New Tech, Cody plans to attend Shasta College to complete his general education before transferring to a four-year university.
  • GOING WITH THE GRAIN - Bill Meek, President of Meek’s Lumber and Hardware, cut the ribbon to celebrate the Anderson store’s grand opening at 6781 Eastside Rd. Meek’s raised $13,000 for a K-9 unit for the Anderson Police Department.   • PRIDE OF ANDERSON - The Anderson Chamber of Commerce presented the 30th Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday at Win-River Casino. Prime 11 Cinemas won Business of the Year, with CEO Ken Hill, left accepting the award. Corky Keenan, center, won the Distinguished Service Award, Lynn Gilliss, right, won the Grace Bell Memorial Award.
  • RUNNING ALLOWED - Tori Bridges sprints ahead of Anderson Mayor Keith Webster and Redding Mayor Dcik Dickerson during Lean-N-Green Day held at the Anderson River Park on March 21. The event, sponsored by Shasta County Public Health, involved a walk on the park's trail system and featured booths with information on nutrition and foods to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.

  • ARBOR DAY PLANTING - The Cottonwood Garden Club planted five Crape Myrtles in the small park on Front Street across from the post office in Cottonwood. The garden club has maintained the park for 50 years. The Crape Myrtles planted were also memorials for the lost loved ones of club members Jayne Smith and Irma Hampton. Smith is pictured with Bruce Stratton who helped with the planting. La Saine Ware, President of the Cottonwood Garden Club, said that she wants to see year-round color at the park. Daffodils and Forsythia bloom in spring. The Crape Myrtles bloom in summer and fall. The Pyracantha trees, which were planted years ago, show red in the wintertime.
  • FIRST COAT - Crewmembers of Frank Acosta Plastering put a base coat of plaster on the new Cottonwood Community Library, which is scheduled to open June 1.

  • LEARNING ABOUT ELK: Robyn Hartman's 4th grade class learns about elk from Lou Prusinovski last week at the North Cottonwood School library by comparing an elk and a deer antler. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided money for books for the school.
  • ANDERSON'S FIRST FIRE HALL: Still standing, Fire Hall #1 at the corner of East Center and Ferry Streets, was built in 1903 for around $90 with used lumber and nails.

  • PATRIOTIC ASSEMBLY: Veterans from the Anderson VFW Post 9650 led K-2 students at East Cottonwood Elementary School in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of 'You're a Grand Old Flag,' on Feb. 13. Pictured left to right are Herman Shoopman, Bob Peterson, Bill McKinney, Rose Scott, Principal, Jim Granad and Fred Schluete. The veterans talked about which war they served in and which branch. Peterson also played taps on his bugle.
