COLOR GUARD -- The last remaining U.S. Marine Corps mounted color guard, riding wild mustang palomino horses rescued from the Bureau of Land Management's Adopt a Horse program, takes part in leading the 19th annual Northern California Veterans Day Parade Nov. 5 in the City of Shasta Lake.
Gunnery Sgt. Mike Bate of Pennsylvania is the Staff NCO in charge. Other riders include Sgt. Cole of Arizona, Sgt. Torrealba and Cpl. Villalobos, both of California, Lance Cpl. Rivas of Illinois and Sgt. Marks of Idaho. The mounted color guard is based in Barstow, Calif.

  • BACK TO BASICS -- Singer Chris McAndles, wearing flag shirt, performs his original ballad 'Back to Basics' as members of the Dorris Lions hold aloft a 30-foot by 60-foot American flag, usually flown atop a 200-foot flag pole, the tallest in California. The performance helped kick off the 19th annual Northern California Veterans Day Parade, held Nov. 5, 2011, in the City of Shasta Lake.
  • GRAND MARSHAL -- Chief Master Sgt. Bob Dunlap, U.S. Air Force (retired), of Cottonwood, center at top, is one of three parade grand marshals for the 19th annual Northern California Veterans Day parade, held Nov. 5, 2011, in the City of Shasta Lake. The parade is organized by the Shasta Lake Lions. Following 26 years of service in the military, Dunlap took on the job of Shasta County's Veterans Service Officer in January 2010. Accompanied by his wife Pam, Dunlap rides in a 1962 Chevrolet convertible owned and driven by Jerry Beaumont, accompanied by his wife Lee.
  • LOCAL HEROES -- Riding proudly on a float sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9650 in Anderson are Post Commander Don Wehunt, driver; Honor Captain Ricky Collingwood, Chaplain Ken Williams and Honor Guard members Larry Probst, Fred Schlueter, John McShane, Guy Miller and Herman Schoopman.
  • MARCHING MASCOT -- The goat mascot from Shasta Lake School follows the school band float. The band is directed by Miss Chelsie Updegraff.

The 19th annual Northern California Veterans Day parade stepped off sharply at 10 a.m. down Shasta Lake Boulevard in the City of Shasta Lake on Saturday, Nov. 5. A total of 94 entries made it one of the longest parades ever while crowds along the parade route made it one of the best attended parades in recent memory. The parade is hosted by the Shasta Lake Lions.
