  • COP STOP: Thirty two Municipal Motorcycle Officers of California and their riders stopped overnight at the Knights Inn in Anderson last week. The group, some active police officers and some retired, was on their 14th annual motorcycle ride. They left Anderson, heading to Lassen over state route 89 to Mt. Shasta, up Interstate-5 and eventually to Medford, Ore.

  • HIGH CONCENTRATION - Tallee Loustalot, 3, works on her quilt square at the Cottonwood Library last week during Story Time. The quilt will contain several Story Time squares when it is made and then will be on display at the new Cottonwood Library, 3427 Main Street, when it opens on June 1.
  • STAGING AREA - Thirty fire trucks and 10 assist vehicles assembled at the Shasta District Fairgrounds last Thursday, April 19 in honor of Cal Fire's North Region Chief of Staff Operations Bryan Zollner, who died in a car wreck on April 12. The trucks formed a procession up Interstate 5 to a memorial for Zollner which was held at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Redding. Some 1,500 people attended the service including California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
  • DRUM - The DAWI Drum Group will perform at the Anderson High School Wed., April 25 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and tomorrow at West Valley School, at the same times, for Native American Heritage and Culture Day.
  • 	SMOKE FROM ROOF: Interim Fire Chief Roy Del Carlo talks to Fire Captain Phil McNeal as they check the source of the smoke from the Burger King on North Street on Thursday. The smoke was from an electrical motor on the roof.
  • BRINGING WATER: Volunteer Firefighter Joel Covert of the Anderson Fire District brings a water line around a Lloyd Lane house that burned on April 17. Firefighters from Anderson, Redding, Shasta County, Happy Valley and CDF fought the blaze that eventually destroyed the house. Two dogs died in the fire.

  • BURNED OUT HOUSE AND CAR - The shell of an automobile and the house in Happy Valley stand as a grim reminder what fire can do in a matter of minutes.
  • EXAMINING THE HOUSE - A member of the Search and Rescue team was in the house last Wednesday along with forensic specialists in search for clues which survived the fire in which six people died.
  • SIFTING ASHES - Members of the Shasta County Search and Rescue team look for clues which may be buried in the ashes of the Wilcox home in Happy Valley.
  • BLIND LOVE: Even if Saint, the horse, and Lotti, the pony, cannot see Katie and Stan Ball, the animals know they are loved and cared for by their rescuing family.
  • SEWING WARMTH: Anderson High School Life Skills classes, under the direction of teacher Mary Springhorn, presented Oak River Rehab with lap quilts the classes learned how to make.

  • LOOKING FOR MOM - A baby opossum travels up rescuer Victoria Dolan’s arm heading for her shoulder. Once the four young babies reach a certain stage, around 8-10 weeks, they are placed in an aviary for an additional few weeks before being released back into the wild.
  • BREAKFAST IS GOOD - Rescue worker Rhonda Breshears feeds a squirrel, whose eyes have not yet opened, with small-mammal formula at the Shasta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation center in the Anderson River Park. Breshears will feed the squirrel every 2-3 hours for about six weeks.

  • BLIND PASS - Jake Morales, back, hands the baton off to Tyler Stevenson in the 4x100 meter relay. The team went on to win the junior varsity relay with a 47.9. The team consisted of Ethan Clark, Derek Serna, Stevenson and Morales.
  • SWING AT THIS - West Valley’s Jared Frye watches as the ball, thrown by Anderson’s Cody McCary, comes to the plate at Friday’s game in West Valley. Anderson’s Zach Gibbins hit a grand slam home run as the Cubs scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh to win 16-13.
  • GOING UP - Jessie Bailey heads for the pole vault bar at the meet last Wednesday. She registered a 7-0 to win. The varsity girls had 95 points in the 30 events.
  • CRIME SCENE CLUES - A body outline, cola cans and footprints were among the clues at the “CSI North Cottonwood” science night.
  • McOMBER FLIES - West Valley’s Josh McOmber sails over the 110-meter hurdles to take a 1st place 15.14 at last week’s meet with Enterprise. McOmber also took the 300-meter hurdles with a 41.20. On Saturday at the track meet in Chico McOmber broke the meet record in 14.2 on the 110 high hurdles.
  • COMPARISON - Katie Basinger’s hand compares the pH to a chart for “acid, neutral, or base” after testing the cups of cola at “CSI North Cottonwood.”

  • WATCHING A LOW ONE GO BY - Cody McCary, who went 3-for-3 against Trinity last Friday, had two home runs and 3 RBIs. Anderson took Trinity 23-5 as Mario Trotter pitched the win. Trotter also had a home run.
  • LEARNING ABOUT ELK: Robyn Hartman's 4th grade class learns about elk from Lou Prusinovski last week at the North Cottonwood School library by comparing an elk and a deer antler. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided money for books for the school.
  • EXPLAINING THE DAY: New Strength Coach Tim Patterson talk to students in the weight room about their daily training schedules at West Valley high School
