Written on Nancy Veatch authors book to teach literacy:

Let's recognize Mrs. Veatch as the true professional she is. Literacy is maybe the primary reason that our system of government functions as it does. Without it, those in power can use intimidation to force their ways. With it, the "common folk" are able to study the issues and come to their own conclusions. Mrs. Veatch is committed to doing all she can to ensure that the playing field is more level than it would be if people were not able to read and keep them selves informed. Thank You Mrs. Veatch!

Written on Anderson, Redding submit competing bids for Shasta courthouse facility:

Congratulations Anderson. The proposal you have prepared and presented is well thought out and professionally prepared. Comparing it with the two others presented makes one wonder if those promoting the alternative thought they had some sort of "entitlement" and that it was simply a matter of going through the motions and the state would hand them a new courthouse. Talk about a wake up call! Good Luck and thanks for elevating the south county from a doormat to a player in the minds of those living in other parts of the county.

Written on Casa Ramos closes; business reopens next day as Casa Cuevas:

We ate there today and it was great! Thank you Laticia and Carlos for wanting to keep this business open and having faith in the Anderson community.

Written on What were you doing on Sept. 11, 2001?:

We were just waking up in the morning and had on one of the news shows. As soon as we learned what happened, we prayed for those in the towers and those fighting the fires. We left on a vacation to Vancouver Island (Canada) later that day and were overwhelmed by the love and caring of the folks in Victoria. There is a memorial to Canadian soldiers on the corner of the Provincial Capitol grounds and it was covered with flowers with more being brought throughout the day (this two days after 9-11). Very moving.

Written on Disabilities soccer team sign ups:

What an inspiration. Thank you for devoting your time to these kids.

Written on Four candidates seek 3 Council seats:

Thank you, each and every one, for your willingness to step forward and serve. That's what makes our community (and country) great.

Written on Community library to mark first year:

Congratulations to the staff and volunteers. With so many feeding at the public trough, it's great to see a community come together and provide something that is used by those aged from 1 to 100 all funded without taxpayer money. What a concept!

Written on Have you ever been to the Mosquito Serenade concerts at Anderson River Park? :

They are awesome. If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to go. Ken does a great job getting top quality entertainment that we can enjoy for FREE!. Thank you sponsors.

Written on Cottonwood couple earns 2007 business kudos from Greater Redding Chamber:

Well said ..... and I completely agree.

Written on Corporate welfare:

Well said.

Written on Prairie/Pacheco scouts cross over the bridge:

That's what I love about the Valley Post (paper) and this website. Where else do kids - scouts, sports, school activities, etc - get recognized and encouraged for their accomplishments. Bravo. subscribe and support this so it doesn't go away .... or turn to the negative news that might sell more papers.

Written on 3-year-old run over by truck, dies of injuries :

Forget the fact that he may be an illegal, the lesson here for us all to learn is that toddlers can get behind a car very quickly ... and it only takes a second of not paying attention for disaster to happen. Please .... all .... make sure you have all the little ones in sight when backing up.

Written on Man dies in Lake California car wreck:

Speed kills! Speed plus alcohol - what can one say?

Written on Logging expo speaker urges Earth caring:

Thanks for coming loggers. The welcome mat is out for you next year ..... and the next .... and the next.

Written on Loggers, haulers meet for annual expo :

Hey Loggers,

Welcome to Anderson. We look forward to your visit every year with a huge hand of support for your industry.

Written on Business Shorts: When hiring, choose training or education?:

Great points John makes. One of the main things that a degree shows me is that a person had the tenacity to stick out the time it took to get through it. I've also found that (generally) a degree from someone who has returned to college after some time experiencing life outside school (whether in the workforce or running a household) is often more valuable. The degree appears to mean more to them because they better understand the value of it.

One thing holds true though, and it might be a good subject for a future column by John. Misspellings, typographical errors or bad grammar on a resume, cover letter or job application finds the candidate's package in the trash faster than anything else. If the person does not take the careful time or effort to submit something error-free when they want something (such as a job), how can they be expected to perform when they have landed the job?

I find these careless errors on applications from candidates with all education and experience levels.

Written on Firefighters receive honors:

Congrats to all that rec'd awards. My brother-in-law was a longtime chief of the Palo Cedro Volunteers and I can remember how close-knit a "brotherhood" they all were. It's wonderful to see the awards but one mustn't forget, they are all sacrificing and giving back to their communities. Volunteer firefighters are truly awesome folks. Thanks for all you do!

Written on Schaefer elected mayor:

Thank you Keith Webster. You are Anderson's biggest cheerleader, but more than that .... you are also just a great leader.

Written on Feature series to predict four possible South County futures:

If you have thoughts or input, go to the meeting on Jan. 31 or to the community meetings to be held soon after in either Cottonwood, Anderson or Happy Valley.

Written on Fierce storm hits North State:

I agree. For those that bash PG&E, I think they ought to think of two things. First, would you go out in the storm (while it was still raging) to restore someone's power who did not really respect what you were doing to help them? ... and ... for all those that complain about power costs, think about when you are out, and how much you would pay to have the power restored for that 24 hours (pretty cheap for what it gives you isn't it?) Think about it!!!!!!!!

Written on Council seeks next round of microenterprise loans:

The core to real growth and stability is diversity and small business entrepreneurs. Keep encouraging them and keep them in south County.

Written on The best photographs we published in 2007 :

You guys have done a great job of telling the story of local stuff through photos. Keep it up.

Written on New fire chief for Anderson:

Welcome to Anderson!

Written on Photo Gallery: WVHS Powderpuff football:

Hey Students,

If you like these photos and want them to continue, post some comments and let the Valley Post know.

Written on Photo Gallery: AUHS Fashion Suicide:

Great pictures, Paul. I've enjoyed the new emphasis on kids in action at the school(s). They are having "positive" fun and getting rewarded for it with their pictures on the web. What a neat idea. Keep it up - please.

Written on Cottonwood Community Library gets $5,000 grant :

Can't wait to see those watercolors. Thank you Shasta Regional Community Foundation for the grant money and to Elaine for doing a winning job of writing the grant.

Written on City proposes shared-use gym in New Tech High parking lot :

What a concept! Two gov't agencies (the city and the school district) sharing a resource. Anderson is leading the way on this one. The recently completed Teen Center is a shared building of the city and the county. It's refreshing that some common sense is with some gov't agencies and they don't all think they need to have their very own Taj Mahal.

Written on Perspective: Counting the minutes:

Your analysis of how things can look different depending on the prism one is looking through is valid. Thanks for clarifying the times as well as pointing out the need for a second fire station -- one of either side of the tracks.

Written on Vehicle fire destroys mobile home in Anderson :

Congrats to the AFD for a response time of 9 minutes. To save as much of a mobile as was done is pretty remarkable. Anderson is fortunate to have that kind of dedication and fast response.

Written on Photo galleries of Friday night football: Foothill at Anderson, Chico at West Valley:

WOW! Local football shots and scores on Saturday morning. Thanks .... and keep up the good work!

Written on Hats and skateboards banned at Anderson district schools:

Is this taking away some freedom from the students. Of course, but it is also a lesson that rules are made to be followed. When the expressions are either gang related or are disruptive, then something must be done. If the board had decided to only ban "offensive" hats, that would have been discriminatory and would be violating freedom of expression. But by banning them all, that argument is a mute point. Congratulations to the board for taking the high road and protecting those students that are there to learn.

Written on Attitude everything for new bank manager:

Way to go, Jean. I met you in Palo Cedro and enjoyed working with you there. Good luck and congratulations on "coming home".

Written on Fireball finale to Serenade:

Congrats to the city of Anderson for bringing such great talent to its citizens at Mosquito Seranade. What an ending! Can't wait till next year.

Written on Big Blue alumni dinner draws crowd:
