At this price, I certainly hope it's for all three nights and that the other two nights have someone with a big name.
About time, and good riddance. The city will be much better off.
in response to southcounty1: Dale was a great member of Anderson PD and a good chief who was terrorized by the APO and its idiot members, as well as councilman Day. I hope he goes thru with his lawsuit. Our short-term "city manager" Dana was certainly not a supporter. We are glad she is history.

Are you ever mis-informed.
Off the subject, but directed at the council: Can someone tell me how a Chief of Police can be away from work on "medical leave", yet still referee basketball for pay? Seems well enough to be working to me. Just curious.
Yeah, but is Norma ever going to allow enforcement against the big-rig drivers who violate City ordinance every day? Nope, she won't. Too much to lose. Votes!

And I bet more than one of them would be willing to hand their job and badge over to you for a bit. That would be fun, don't you think?
You are lucky they don't mind totally erroneous information being posted on this site, as you obviously are talking out of some foreign orifice.
in response to anotherjeff: This is easy: 'Direct' to trial. The evidence is too damning; a Preliminary would be prosecutor's field day. This is not to say, "direct" has any thing to do with speedy justice. I expect (hope?) justice_will_be_served, eventually (in a court_of_law), despite the machinations of the Police Union.

And you know this because? Because you've seen and analyzed the evidence? Because you were there? Or is it just because you choose to make yet another idiotic statement? I will go with the latter. As for your comments about the "Police Union", that is even more absurd. You obviously love to hear yourself talk, and moreso, see your drivel in print. Your fifteen minutes of fame perhaps. Not!
Don't know Harper, but one of these guys is a real scaredy cat.
in response to HeardEnough: I for one am tired of "hiring" an investigator. I don't feel they needed to hire one to get rid of the old fire chief. If you're not happy with an employee's performance, fire him. Do we have to pay this creep until he's found guilty? I am confident that rape or not, he violated some type of procedure. APD would have looked much better by just firing him on the spot.Let him go to the labor board or sue to get his job back. No, we now have to foot the bill for an investigation, plus his wages. Dale Webb needs to "grow a pair". He knows the behavior of his crew. He needs to tell them that HIS job is in jeorpardy and inact a "zero tolerance" policy for crap like this. In the case of Officer Modine attending a party where alcohol was supplied to a minor, the chief should have said in front of the entire force..."this is unacceptable for an APD officer. I am putting everyone on notice that I won't allow this type of behavior." give him a week off without pay or wash the cars or something. I think he needs to drop the hammer on everyone!

Perhaps they need to drop the hammer on Webb?
Once again, Jeff speaks of something he knows nothing about. The union(s) have absoulutely no power, nor ability, nor desire to "carefully craft" criminal court documents. Tell me, are you stupid, or are you just pretending? At least they didn't hire Purcell. There's your professional cover-up for the admin had that happened. Shawn Watts is a good guy, and has ABSOLUTELY no reason to cover anything for anyone.
Is it true that 7R tracked this officer down at his house today? If that's the case, that is sinking low for sure. I missed the early news and will try to stay up for the 11 pm.
He's a dirty cop because he drinks and parties?
How about Herger talks to Red Emerson and ask just why it is that he and other large timber holdings have locked out all the law-abiding sportsmen. The cartels must really enjoy being able to do their work behind locked gates with very few security patrols to interrupt their work. Makes one wonder just why it is they chose to lock the good guys out, when in essence they are giving the cartel quite a nice and secure setting. Think about it.
Wow, had I read further up the column, I would have realized you were the only one writing, and I would have left you to yourself. Oh well, I spoke, and I am sorry. See your still mourning the untimely passing of Johnny M. Well, back to your writing, I'll bother you no more.
Hey Becca. Need instructions on how to get to redding.com? Seems like you need to go there and read the whole story instead of just the little bit you either read, or had read to you. Get the facts right, learn a bit more about the story, and then perhaps you can make an intelligent comment. Nah, I didn't think so.
Becca=Wacko!
ALL incumbents need to be voted out of office this time around, and for several cycles to follow. This would include the likes of Mr. LaMalfa who is trying to jump from one legislative body to another, presumably to avoid issues with term-limits. They ALL need to be voted out and start from scratch.
I find it interesting that you use the DUI press release page as Johnny's Memorial Page.
This guy should be the poster-boy for why birth control should be practiced.

Last I heard, the doctor, the hospital, the technicians involved, none of them, not a one, would have run him for warrants, and he certainly knew this. Quit blaming others for his mistake. Take a look at the world for real, not from your skewed point of view. Sad he died? Sure it is, for many. Anyone elses fault, absolutely not.
Should have locked up the worthless mother for life also, instead, she wears her sons "life without parole" as a badge of honor, and thinks it cool. She needs to leave Shasta County once she's off parole, but then again, her new husband is on parole and likely will forever be, so how is she to leave? On the other hand, she won't leave, she's waiting for her parents to die so she can have their house to herself instead of having to share it with them as she does now. Rest in peace Chris, you didn't deserve what those less than animals did to you.
Could have left Webb out of the interview process as it is useless to interview an incompetent.
Never heard of Trish Clarke working this way, but who knows? I do know that Norma will do anything, illegal or not, to get rid of someone she doesn't like. Look how she and VC got rid of John Sammis years ago.
If the Grand Jury gets involved and does their job correctly, they will subpoena the fire departments phone records prior to Purcell coming on board, and most especially, the cell phone records of the secretary and Purcell. I guarantee you, she was talking to him daily, and probably hourly, as she was from the police department phones prior to the Sammis ousting.
The bottom line is this. It was not "illegal" to hire Purcell. It was, I believe, immoral, as he is clearly a hired gun who knew way too much about this case prior to being "hired". He had a direct pipeline from the fire chiefs "faithful" and "trusted" secretary. The same faithful and trusted secretary who told all of Raners secrets to all her friends and others. The same faithful and trusted secretary who helped write and distribute (along with Comnick) the "anonymous" letter that was the ultimate undoing of former APD chief Sammis. Oh, and by the way, she also was leaking info to Purcell about Sammis, and guess who came in riding on his white stallion to save the city from Sammis. You got it...Purcell. Illegal? No. Immoral? Most certainly. I can tell you this, they need to get rid of this "faithful" secretary, and of course, Comnick. Webster and Schaeffer? Not as bad as Comnick, but certainly due for replacement.
Still want to know if much of this started with an "anonymous" letter mailed to board members. As several people know, Comnick wrote the "anonymous" letter concerning APD chief John Sammis and sent it to herself and other council members. Funny, the same person who helped her in that endeavor was working for the AFD Chief at the same time he was ousted, and was working for Sammis when he was dumped. Hmmmmm....sure smells familiar, doesn't it?
I bet everyone else wishes they could pick their own investigator. One who you had previously employed makes for a one-sided investigation. After all, he or she may just feel they owe you something.
One thing that Purcell doesn't realize is that his "right-hand girl", who was also the Fire Chief's secretary, and of course was Raner's confidante, has ALWAYS told on them. Each of them! She never kept a secret any of them told her. To make things worse, she's right in Comnick's pocket, so you can see how things work. She kisses and tells, you might say, and writes letters right along with Norma. By the way Norma, she tells on you also. She told the story to many people about you and she writing the "anonymous" letter which got Sammis his lovely departing package. She's told the story many times of you talking about closed session conversations. She'll deny it for sure, but you have to think she is wondering to this day if anyone ever recorded those conversations. She tells on you too, and don't you forget it.
Why are Fitzpatrick and Morgan allowing this to happen? Of course Morgan has no ties to the Fire District, but he does have control over APD, and the City. Why is he allowing City money to be spent on this investigation? Why is he allowing Purcell the use of a City vehicle, office space, almost assuredly City personnel and time? Fitzpatrick surely knows what is going on, but I have often wondered if he has what it takes to stand up to the backwoods thinking and ways of Norma Comnick. I guarantee this...if Neal Purcell asks of Webb, it will be done. He owes that man for a great retirement as he never would have made it past patrolman if not for Neal Purcell. If the people that worked for him, and those who worked with him in the past were asked, and were not afraid of retribution, they would tell you he is a complete incompetent just riding along, biding his time, waiting for the magic number.
Comnick most likely supported Shelp in the sex case since she wanted nothing more than to fire the victim in that case for a very long time. Bet it broke her heart when she found out Shelp had done that, and she had to wave goodbye to him, and yet still see the "objectionable" (in her eyes) victim still working. Evil woman that Norma.
Who's typing Purcell's reports. Either the fire chiefs secretary, VC, or Webb's secretary. That's who. And no, he is not licensed as an investigator in the state, but I am not sure that matters all that much. Anyway, it is certainly a witch hunt. I wonder why the Grand Jury doesn't look into Comnicks writing of these "anonymous" letters.
Why is there nothing in the paper about this incident allegedly involving Schaeffer? Details please?
This is the first I have heard of an "anonymous" letter being received. I can tell you this for certain, this does smell of Norma Comnick. Someone should ask her directly whether or not she wrote the anonymous letter to herself and all the city council back when John Sammis was ousted. I would love to hear her publically lie in response to such a question. Perhaps even more significant is that her right hand woman in the writing of that letter, was one of the very persons closest to the fire chief during his tenure. Maybe Mike Fitzpatrick needs to think about the similarities if in fact there was yet another anonymous letter received. Comnick and her right hand woman had better be wondering if someone is going to sicken enough of this matter that he/she decides to come out of the woodwork to finally expose them for what they did to Sammis. VC, are you listening?
Purcell is not "deep rooted" in Anderson. He was a hired-gun from SoCal who happened to live in Montana. He was a hired-gun who did not pay into Social Security and needed quarters. In Anderson he got them. He was a hired gun who had VERY close communication with internal people, including Comnick prior to coming to save the City from John Sammis. By the way, he was the one who suggested Sammis for the job in the first place after "investigation". Now why would you trust him to do it again. Some say he was a long-time "mentor" of Webb, when in reality, he, and the city, had to settle on Webb. Anyone curious about the fact that his right hand girl when at APD is the current secretary for the fire chief. Wonder if he's wondering how her buddy is now investigating him. And what about that trip in a city fire truck by Comnick to visit Purcell in Montana? Anyone ever wonder why the cops could not enforce the big-rig parking laws in town? Wonder if it had to do with the fact Comnick at the time sold truckers insurance? Hope this effort does some good. Perhaps the City Attorney needs to wake up and see what's going on for real, and perhaps the new City Manager (Dana?) will not continue to tolerate this stuff. I doubt it.
How about the time she wrote an anonymous letter to herself, and the rest of the council, and then acted on that very letter in seeking the termination of past police chief Sammis? Bet no one else on the council at that time, nor Scott Morgan, knew she was actually the letter writer. She was and I am sure is, well known for talking to all her friends, and anyone else who will listen about confidential city business, especially after closed-session.
Mom---well stated, yet this Comnick/Purcell thing goes so much deeper. I can assure you Purcell was guaranteed this job long before the Commision took its vote, much like he was all but hired before the Council voted on Sammis. Remember the BBQ that Comnick accused Purcell of drunk driving? Oh well, the council/commisioners have always taken votes far ahead of the "meeting" date. Too bad this paper and the Searchlight, (much less the spineless City Manager) have no reporters with guts enough to expose them.
Beautifully stated Vernon. Kudos to you! I only wish you would have also sent this on to the Searchlight as no one seems to read this online version, or at least no one will participate in discussions. My apologies if you have already sent this to the Redding paper.
Big frigging deal. It was a Passieux. They've been doing weird crap for years.
Norma Comnick is an opportunist. She grants favors to friends. For instance, she is the one who would not allow for years, the police department to enforce the no parking laws regarding big rigs. What was she doing for a living at the time? Selling insurance to the trucking industry. She personally took the opportunity when the crazy Chris Easley burned the cross on the lawn to run now Captain Kirvin up the flagpole in her effort to show how non-racist she and the City really are. Those that know her, and know who she associates herself with know better for sure. She participated in the transfer of a City employee accused of theft from the City Finance Department to the front counter of the police department. Some citizens will remember this time frame as this is when the department quit taking cash. Yes, they would not accept cash. Shame on you Norma Comnick, and shame on Scott Morgan for that particular charade. Ask her about the behind the scenes stuff she pulled to get John Sammis run out of town. Ask her if she and a City employee and another friend mailed an anonymous letter to not only herself, but the rest of the City Council to get him run out of town. Pilot 7, you are absolutely right. So few read this paper that these comments are almost worthless. This woman is a con, and should not be in public office anywhere.
Did he tell you how understaffed and overworked the police department is? This, in spite of the recent contract when the members were "assured" they would "try" to maintain minimum staffing. On the other hand, maybe the shortage is due to the fact they are losing people BECAUSE of the current administration. They go to work for the sheriff, CHP, and return to poverty-level earnings in Trinity County. Why is it that historically, in the City of Anderson, they NEVER look at the root cause of these things. It's as simple as looking into the promotional practices in the police department for the last many years. Look at who their leaders are, and you can see why they leave. Mr. Schaefer, you are not doing your job! You blow your horn while sitting firmly astride the proverbial fence, and do nothing about the serious problems your city is facing. Time to look into management, or failure to manage in this case. You will have great difficulty when you decide to move onto bigger and better things. The dog you currently ignore will bite you firmly on your backside.
No, I don't think they will go after the real story, especially the Post. Sorry, but that is how I feel. Besides, if the incompetence of previous investigators, admin, both previous and current, has nothing to do with the conviction of this guy, what do they care? The good old boy network is alive and well in the city of Anderson. You know as well as I that they read these blogs. The council members read these blogs. They don't care, that is what it amounts to. Again, kudos to Detective Collier and others who worked to solve this case. Job well done!
"Kirvin said the delay in solving the case was due to a lack of cooperation from the parents, whose lawyers made questioning difficult. He added that there were other elements that lead to the delay, but he said he would not comment about those until Copeland's trial." I think the part he didn't want to comment on is certainly worth inquiring further about. Don't you?
Judging from what I have been reading from posters on the Searchlight site, I would say that it is time to give praise to Detective Collier, but also to ask the current chief just what the holdup was? It appears that someone (more than one poster) thinks he and others botched this case back in 1993, and then stifled the renewal of this investigation some years later. It would be a shame, but it would also tell a story about the people involved, if it was found that the chief and his cronies didn't want this investigation solved sooner. Another big question...why did he allow Detective Collier to do it at this time? Congratulations Detective Collier. It sounds like you have more than just crime fighting to deal with. Do any of these newspapers have the guts to ask the hard questions?
